Dollar Store Halloween Candles

Halloween is a fun holiday to decorate for.  You can go super scary and aim for a creepy home and costume.  Or, if you have littles at home like me, you can add some not so scary DIY items to your home and call it a day. I made these Dollar Store Halloween Candles and they are the perfect, kind of subtle, accent to my fall mantle for October.  Get all the details on this project and more in this month’s Dollar Store DIY hop where my friends and I are sharing awesome Halloween projects.

Paint and Glitter Dollar Store Halloween Candles

The supplies for this project came from, you guessed it, my local Dollar Store.  Here is what I used.

  • Glass pillar candles
  • Shelf liner
  • Black paint
  • White glue
  • Gold and black glittler
  • Paint brush
  • Silhouette or stencil and craft knife

I started with my Silhouette design software and sized a few Halloween graphics to fit my candle.  Then, using the vinyl settings, I cut the images out of adhesive shelf liner which just so happens to match my work table!  I have found that these patterns sometimes sell cheaper than then solid color or clean stuff.

I weeded the vinyl and applied it to the candles pressing firmly to adhere well and remove any bubbles.  Since shelf liner is removable these stencils can be reused, I was able to easily move them from one candle to another. I used a very small amount of black acrylic craft paint to fill in the images, I needed 2 coats of regular paint to get an opaque effect.  If you are using glass paint one coat is sufficient.

For the glitter effect, I painted glue onto the stencil then sprinkled it with glitter.  I slowly removed the stencils one by one to avoid transferring any paint or glitter and was left with crisp lines and cute candles.
