Christmas tree decorating is different for everyone. Your tree will reflect your taste, your style, and how you view the holiday. Some prefer sentimental trees with generations of ornaments. Others prefer colorful and happy trees!

If you want an elegant and high end look, follow these steps to create a stunning tree.

Start with the right Christmas tree

An elegant tree that you might see at a department store, or in a Christmas village, tends to be tall and full. You can opt for different varieties of evergreen, whether you prefer a faux or real tree. The variety will determine the fullness and lines of the tree.

If you go faux, you can also choose a flocked tree that gives the look of fresh fallen snow on the branches. These trees glow, and give off a cozy feel.

This year I received a 7 foot Prince Flocked tree with warm lights from King of Christmas. It's tall, full, and absolutely gorgeous. King of Christmas is known for quality all around. Their trees are built to last and can be enjoyed for many many years.

If you want to see the full set up and decorating of this tree, subscribe to Creative Ramblings on YouTube. The video will be released at the end of October.

Putting this tree together was a breeze, it comes in 3 clearly marked sections that slot into a stand. There is no extra set up, just slot the sections together and plug it in.

The lights are automatically connected. With any tree, always make sure the lights work before you go any further. Especially if you've had it a while. You don't want to get all those decorations on only to realize half the lights are out.

This tree comes with an easy to use button near the outlet and a remote. I also have mine connected to a a smart plug and set on a timer so it turns on as the sun sets.

A tree stand it pretty basic and should be covered with something. You can opt for a tree skirt or a tree collar. I love the clean look of a collar. Just place it around the stand before putting the tree up.

Once you have the tree up, even if you've had this tree for years, the next step is to fluff all the branches. We keep trees in bags or boxes during the off season so their branches get squished together. An unfluffed tree looks off kilter and a little sad. Don't skip this step.

fluffing Christmas tree with gloves

King of Christmas provides these handy gloves that go up over the elbow so you can really get in there and fluff all the branches. This keeps your arms scratch free!

The best way to fluff is to start at the top, toward the center of the tree, and pull each branch up and out. Do this for every branch on the tree. Step back occasionally to see how it looks and stop once the tree looks full.

Pick a Christmas color scheme

A monochromatic color scheme will give a traditional and elegant feel. Reds, greens, golds, and silver are perfect for this type of themed tree.

I like to stick with gold and silver. I have used these colors for years so I already have the ornaments, no need to buy more each year. I have done a colorful tree before, and still used these ornaments as a base, just added in a few new colors.

gold ornaments

There has been red in the past as well, but I've always used the metallics along side. I definitely recommend buying gold and silver ornaments that you can keep for years, they never really go out of style.

Add decorative picks

Time to start adding decorations. Decorative picks like these silver berry picks make the tree look even more full. Add most of the picks to the top of the tree to create a focal point, and a few down the length of the tree. You can mix and match different colors or styles, or stick with one. Choose picks that match your color scheme.

Large Christmas ornaments as filler

Large ornaments can help fill in gaps in the tree. I have about 12 total large gold ornaments. They can be expensive, but you don't need many. I place these deep in the tree so there are no gaps. Again, this makes everything look full and elegant.

Space out the large ornaments evenly around the tree, stepping back to see how it looks from all angles.

A sparce tree gives off a very different look. If you are going for something simple and boho, I love this King Noble Fir from King of Christmas. It would be beautiful decorated sparsely with Scandinavian ornaments.

Christmas tree ribbon

Choose 2 or 3 types of ribbon that match your color scheme. They should be wide, about 2-3 inches, and wired to help them stay in place.

types of ribbon

I am using this new frosted snowflake ribbon and a gold version I have saved and used for the past couple of years. No need to get all new ribbon every year.

Cut a section of ribbon about 3 feet long. Starting at the top of the tree, tuck the end deep into the branches. Then loop the ribbon going down the tree and tuck the middle into the branches, add another loop and tuck the final end in the lower branches.

I used 8 sections of ribbon on this tree, alternating the styles and placement. I started some sections at the top, and others part way down the tree.

Add smaller ornaments

The final step in elegant Christmas tree decorating is to fill the spaces with smaller ornaments in your chosen color scheme. I am using gold and silver ornaments in a variety of shapes and sizes. I do this step slowly, and step back after every couple to see how the tree looks.

This tree doesn't have many ornaments on it. But the placements of the large pieces deep in the tree, and the smaller ones on the outside gives it a full look.

Tips for taking down your tree

Be sure you take lots of pictures of your tree and you and your family enjoying it! Not only do you have great memories but it helps you remember how you decorated when Christmas comes around next year.

Carefully pull off decorations in the reverse order of how you placed them. Small ornaments first, and store them nicely in an ornament box. Then take down the ribbon and roll it back up, save the cardboard roll it came on.

Take out the large ornaments, and finally the picks. Store everything neatly so it doesn't get damaged and you will have these decorations for years.

Finally the tree. Make sure there is nothing left on it, unplug it from the wall then separate the 3 sections. King of Christmas provides a sturdy bag with each tree to place everything in and store away until next year.
