What is UV printing?

UV printing uses photosensitive ink and applies it directly to hard surfaces. It’s then cured instantly with UV light resulting in vibrant, long lasting products.

UV printing is not new, it has been a commercial process for years. We are now seeing this process available to hobbyists and small business owners with machines like the eufyMake E1.

This machine is compact and portable allowing you to set up in a craft space or shop. It’s also budget friendly, coming in much lower than the next closest machine.

What surfaces can you print on?

With a UV printer you can print on a wide range of materials and objects. This includes metal, wood, leather, acrylic, glass, and ceramic. Items like a phone case, ceramic coaster, metal key chain, acrylic photo stand, and canvas. This method is not suitable for fabrics, UV printing is ideal for printing directly onto hard surfaces.

The eufyMake E1 is a flatbed printer with 2 sizes of bed so you can print small and large objects. There is also an optional rotary attachment so you can print on tumblers and mugs.

This machine comes with the ability to print stickers. UV DTF stickers are known for their high quality and durability. I have ordered and used them in the past and they hold up so well. Especially on water bottles and other items that get a lot of sun and use.

With the eufyMake E1 you can print directly onto film, then laminate the film and cut out stickers. These can be applied to any hard surface and are great sellers.

eufyMake E1 features

Let’s talk about this UV printer specifically. It’s the first budget-friendly, compact printer of its kind made for crafters and small business owners. I have been using this for a few weeks and I can confidently say the machine works exactly how it is supposed to and it’s so easy.

Specifications

The printer footprint is 520mm x 420mm x 360mm. The max printing area is 420mm x 300mm, and maximum printing height is 100mm. I have my printer set up on a 24” x 48” workbench. I am able to open the front and back doors to accommodate larger materials and have lots of room on the side of the table for my laptop or projects.

It has a modular design featuring various bed sizes and accessories opening up a wide range of printable materials. This includes a mini flat bed, standard flatbed, and rotary accessory that holds drinkware of all kinds with auto leveling and grips that solidly hold the drinkware in place.

There is also a laminating machine that seals in prints on film to create stickers.

The ink is a proprietary photo sensitive resin ink in 100ml, easy to install cartridges. You can purchase an ink kit that is CMYK + White + Varnish along with a cleaning cartridge for $299. Ink usage will vary depending on the types of prints you are creating.

eufyMake Studio software is packed with features while still maintaining a user friendly experience. It’s available for Windows and Mac and there is an app as well. The software offers designs, elements, and templates that can be printed right away, or you can upload your own photos and designs. There are also AI features allowing you to create fast custom designs.

Within the software you have access to a camera for precise design placement on material. There is also a maintenance center where you can monitor the upkeep of the printer.

Texture printing is the coolest feature I’ve found on this machine. It creates prints with an elevation up to 5mm resulting in gorgeous, 3D designs on solid, flat surfaces. Texture can be achieved because each layer of ink is instantly cured and dried with a UV light allowing more ink to build up on top. The built-in generative AI tools in the software help create a depth map that is then translated into a print.

Safety is always important to keep in mind when adding a machine to your shop. The E1 is fully enclosed for smaller projects, and protective glasses are included for when the doors are open. There is a smell to the ink, but it’s not harmful, and the machine is equipped with a HEPA filter.  I run an air purifier in my workshop and usually have a window open when printing.

Most prints are completed quickly, however layered prints will take longer. A print that requires a white base with color on top or a textured print will take some time.

Here are a few examples of print times.

Most UV printers require ongoing maintenance, and this one is no different. However, most of the cleaning and maintenance is automatic and done on a schedule. Just leave the machine on and it will take care of itself. It also prompts you when more processes are needed.

Why you should be interested in UV printing

If you are a crafter making and/or selling your items, this technique is probably on your radar. If you create art and place it on items to sell, you should definitely consider UV printing.

Sublimation is a typical process for transferring an image to a hard surface. It requires a special water based ink be printed onto a special paper, then wrapped around the object and heated to transfer the ink. It’s a great process, very affordable, but it’s time consuming. Sublimation can also be finicky. If the time, temperature, and pressure are not just right your image will be distorted.

UV printing cuts down on time, does not require any heat pressing, and produces reliable images over and over again.

The ability to print directly onto hard surfaces allows you to put your designs on just about anything. Pair this process with sublimation or DTF transfers for fabric, and you can create anything for your customers.

Adding a UV printer to your shop opens up so many possibilities and can grow your business.
