How to Instill Healthy Habits Through Outdoor Play

What is your kid’s absolute favorite activity?  What makes them light up and get excited, what can they do all day and never get bored?  For my girl’s it’s playing outside, and just about any outdoor play will do. I love watching my kids use nature and their imaginations to entertain themselves for hours, just like I did as a kid.  I’ve even gotten the opportunity this summer to teach them a few simple games from my childhood.  This summer we’re working to instill healthy habits through outdoor play and having a blast doing it.

This summer we didn’t schedule much, we tend to stay close to home and enjoy our local places of play.  The favorite spot just so happens to be our back yard.  Mid morning my girls head out the door to find their friends and play.  Beautiful weather, an open space and friends are all they seem to need to enjoy the day.

In a world where electronics dominate our days, adults too not just kids, it’s so refreshing to know that when given the opportunity kids can still be kids when they get outside and play.  When my kids do come inside, it’s usually for a snack or water.  They tend to be dirty and sweaty but always smiling.  We recently discovered CLIF Kid Zbars®, and now have a new go to snack.  CLIF Kid® makes nutritious snacks from organic ingredients that are specially-crafted for kids’ developing taste buds and active lives.  I like having a snack option that I feel good about and a huge bonus that my kids like it too.

CLIF Kid is dedicated to reclaiming play.  And they’re encouraging boys and girls everywhere to get back outside, push their boundaries and feed their adventures.  Balanced and active play lays the foundation for a skilled, healthy, resilient and successful society.  Play is disappearing at home, in school and in communities.  70% of moms played outside when they were kids, just 31% of their kids play outside today.  If your kid is not inclined to run outside and explore, I encourage you to think back to your favorite childhood activity and show your kids how you played.  This summer I taught my daughter how to play hop scotch.  Such a simple game, but we had so much fun.  She now knows how to draw the board and can play it with her friends.  It was exhilarating to play with her and I am taken back to such a simple and joyful time when I watch her.

Summer is far from over, grab a few CLIF Zbars and head outside with your kids.  Check out this CLIF Kid video and tell me about your favorite way to play as a kid.
