Home Sweet Home Wood Slice

I’ve got a non-fall project to share with you today.  I know it’s scandalous!  I love fall but I decided to create something I can use all year.

I picked up a pretty slice of wood from Michael’s on a whim.  I had a 50% off a regular price item coupon and everything I went in for was on sale, I had to use the coupon!  I know you’ve been there.  I wandered into the wood aisle and this slice just jumped out at me.

I brought it home, propped it up in my office, and stared at it for a week before inspiration hit.

This piece has a rustic feel and goes perfectly with my neutral glam fall decor.

Here’s what I used:

  • Wood slice from Michael’s
  • White Chalky Paint (Decoart Americana White Chalky Finish Paint)
  • Paint Brush
  • Con-tact paper for stencil
  • Glitter vinyl
  • Silhouette Cutting machine

I cut ‘Home’ out of clear Con-tact paper using my Silhouette.  I placed the words onto the wood and pressed down nice and good to create a good seal.  Some people use Mod Podge over the stencil and let it dry before painting, this gives a really good seal and makes for very crisp lines.  I have found if you dab your paint, don’t work the brush into the stencil, your lines should be pretty crisp without any Mod Podge.

I painted over the stencil with a single coat of white paint.  I love the finish on this Decoart chalky finish paint.

While the paint was still wet I carefully removed the stencil and let the wood dry completely.

Once dry I added ‘Sweet’ cut from silver glitter vinyl.

Once I figured out what I wanted to do with this, the project was quite simple. Just a little paint and vinyl.

This is on my mantle for now, but will soon be part of a new gallery wall in my front hall.

These wood slices are really popular right now, have you played with one yet?  I’d love to see what you have created.
