A personalized gift is something just about every parent can appreciate. Something sweet and handmade, crafted by a child or spouse, that oozes love and personality. Sappy I know, but true right? I love when my kids make me gifts, each year their creativity grows and I cherish those little creations. Mother’s Day is approaching and I am looking forward to handmade creations from my little ones. But those gifts are top secret of course. So I’ll wait, and come up with some other creative gift ideas. Today I’m sharing a gift that Dads and kids (even older kids) can make for Mom together. This Instagram photo cube is the perfect piece for her desk, and I promise she will love it.
This photo cube is made up of square photos, the kind we scroll through every day on Instagram. I downloaded a few of my favorite family photos to create this cube. You don’t have to use square photos for this cube, any photo can be cropped to the appropriate size and used in this project.
Here is what I used to create this photo cube: (the following are affiliate links)
- Wood block
- Mod Podge
- Sponge brush
- White paint
- Printed photos
After downloading my selected photos from Instagram I needed to re-size them to fit my wood cube. I added the photos to Word and cropped each one to a square, then re-sized them to 3.5″ x 3.5″. I printed the photos on regular paper, no need to get fancy with photo paper, this project actually works best with regular paper.
I started by painted the edges of the block white, a small amount of this will show around each photo.
Once that was dry I attached my photos using Mod Podge. A few tips.
- Using a sponge brush, apply a thin coat to the wood block AND the back of the photo. Allow it to dry for a minute before putting them together.
- Gently place the photo onto the wood block and smooth out any bubbles and wrinkles, too much Mod Podge will create more wrinkles.
- Once all the photos are dry, apply a thin coat to the entire block, covering the photos, to protect it.
This cube makes me smile, I can’t stop turning it and soaking up these memories. A gift like this would be amazing from an older child who has his or her own Instagram account. Chances are Mom probably doesn’t get to see those cute selfies. Print them out and let her soak up some beautiful photos of her “baby”.
