We live in an old charming bungalow, I love this house! It has amazing character, lots of hard wood and stained glass. We were lucky enough to find one that had been meticulously maintained. We have poured so much into making this house a home and working with its unique qualities. When we found out we were expecting a daughter visions of frilly dresses and flower hair clips danced in my head. The problem? Housing a little girly girl in an 8×10 room with a closet just under 4′ x 1.5′. I think I managed pretty well. I want to share with you how I am organizing a small nursery closet.
We removed the door and painted the closet interior the same color as the room. Then used adjustable shelving inside. I have adjusted these shelves once, it’s perfect for when her dresses get a little longer. Her hanging items are on a tension shower rod. Ideal for when I adjust the shelves and want to move things around.
First rule – no toys in her room! Stick with me here, I promise I don’t deprive my child. We have a small house but her toys are in a play nook off our main living room (I’ll show you that another day). A bedroom, in my mind, is for sleeping. And I don’t want to be tripping over toys at night. Besides the fact that I have no place to put toys in this room. (Again an 8×10 room!)
Second rule. I go through her clothes and belongings on a monthly basis and weed out what she has outgrown and get it out of the room. I have bins in the basement sorted by size, no need to keep them in sight.
This is how I organized her closet.
The 2 bins to the left on the floor of the closet are essential. When L was born she was in newborn clothes for a very short time. I had one bin with basic 0-3 month and another with 3-6 clothes. If you have a little one you know that they wake up one morning and are in a new size, and I didn’t want to go digging in the basement for something to wear.
I got all of the boxes and bins at Michael’s over a period of a couple of weeks. They have a whole aisle of this stuff and it’s always changing. <3 it!
For any other items not in the closet I have a long dresser. Tops bottoms PJ’s etc. This dresser has a door which was great for baby essentials. Bottom shelf – bibs, burp cloths, receiving blankets. Top shelf wipes, creams, lotions and nursing supplies.
The only other piece of storage in this room is a covered wicker basket for blankets.
So that’s my storage solution. What are your organizing tips for a small room? Anything I could use here?
