Upcycled Fabric Wall Hanging

March 15, 2019 by Sarah 10 Comments

Learn how to make a beautiful upcycled fabric wall hanging using items from the thrift store.  Today’s post is part of the At Home DIY monthly challenge, which means you can find all kinds of upcycled projects at the end of this post.  Lots of inspiration waiting for you to check out.  I love simple and inexpensive wall art and this fabric wall hanging fits that bill.  Take a look at the super basic supplies I used and exactly how you can make your own.

Upcycled fabric wall hanging - creative ramblings

I wanted to create a larger statement piece for my living room without spending a lot of money. I headed to the thrift store to see what inspired me.  (If you want to see where I’m shopping and all my cool finds be sure to watch my Instagram Stories).  On this trip I picked up a white cloth napkin for $.62 that was in really good, if not new, condition.  When I got home I gathered a few other supplies and set out to make a fabric wall hanging.

Fabric Wall Hanging Supplies

  • Cloth napkin
  • Stick
  • Twine
  • Hot Glue
  • Printed verse
  • Sharpie
  • Magnets (optional)

Fabric wall hanging supplies

I started by typing a verse that both calms and motivates me; For with God nothing shall be impossible Luke 1:37.  I laid this out in PicMonkey and printed it on a letter sized sheet of paper.  To transfer the words to the fabric, I placed the print under the napkin and used a Sharpie to trace them.  Super easy process!

Once the letters were traced, I went back over each word and filled it in with more black to help the verse stand out.

To hang this fabric art I grabbed a stick from my yard, yup just a plain old stick!  This one has been inside all winter so it’s dry and rounded on the edges from lots of sword fights and other pretend play.  I wrapped one edge of the fabric around the stick and used hot glue to secure the edges.  I also added magnets to the bottom corners to help the napkin hang nicely.

Finally, I tied a piece of twine to the ends of the stick to hang it up.  This fabric wall hanging is above my piano and fits perfectly with the simple decorations I have in that corner.

If you like this post, and love a good thrift store project, be sure to pin it!
