Eco-friendly Upcycled Jar Planter

April is Earth month, I am using this time to make simple eco-friendly changes at home. One goal is to grow more plants and I'm starting with this simple eco-friendly upcycled jar planter.

I have found, through trial and error over many years, that small changes done consistently become habits. I want to live in an eco-friendly home and raise earth conscious children.  This is a daunting task but I am confident that with small changes I can move toward that goal and help keep our earth green and happy.  

One change I am making for Earth month is to bring more plants into my home.  Plants put a smile on my face, they freshen the air around me and can provide food.  I am growing a herb garden in my kitchen this Spring, some of these plants will make their way out to the deck when summer arrives, but for now I love having these fresh scents indoors.  Picking my own herbs saves money, a trip to the store and excess packaging.  I am also bringing plants into other spaces in my home, including my bathroom.  A pretty upcycled jar planter is easy to make with items you probably already have at home. 

Upcycled Jar Planter

Here is what I used to make this jar planter for my bathroom

• Glass sauce jar
• Rocks
• Soil
• Plant

I save all my jars.  It's wonderful to recycle, but even better to buy items with less packaging and reuse the containers we already have.  For this planter, I cleaned a sauce jar and filled the bottom with rocks.

Then I topped it with soil and added a simple green plant that will do well in low light.  We often have our bathroom curtain closed so this little guy is a perfect fit.

The rocks on the bottom of this jar are essential.  Plants need water and a place for that water to drain.  Be sure not to over water or you will risk mold and droopy plants.
